DIY Captain Jack Sparrow Hair Accessory: The Easiest 1-Minute Hack!

For some reason, I suddenly had an overwhelming desire to get my hands on Captain Jack Sparrow’s iconic hair accessory from Pirates of the Caribbean.

It’s not like I’m planning to wear his whole pirate bandana or full costume. I just felt like it would look incredibly cool if those beads and coins dangled and swayed during my table tennis league matches!

However, gathering the authentic materials—like flattened pirate coins or authentic Japanese Tonbo-dama (traditional glass beads)—is actually pretty difficult. But while I was brainstorming, I came up with an incredibly easy way to make one!

The Ultimate Easy Way to Make a Jack Sparrow Hairpiece

The Secret? Upcycle an Official Merchandise Keychain!

It turns out, official Pirates of the Caribbean merchandise keychains (phone straps) with those exact beads and coins already exist!

Naturally, I hunted one down and bought it second-hand.

From here, I think you can easily guess what happens next…

I simply removed the phone strap part and replaced it with a standard black hair tie. Boom! My ultra-easy Jack Sparrow hair accessory was complete!

Sure, hunting down individual glass beads and crushed coins to make it entirely from scratch might look a bit more authentic, but this upcycling method is highly recommended when you want to make something quick and easy.

Since these specific merchandise straps are a bit older, they might be hard to find brand new nowadays. However, if you spot one at a second-hand shop or an online flea market, this is definitely the easiest DIY method!

A Little Warning About Upcycling Keychains…

Now, if you are going to turn a keychain into a hair accessory, there is one small thing you need to watch out for.

It’s HEAVY.

Usually, things made specifically for your hair are designed to be relatively lightweight. Keychains have absolutely no such consideration! Since my strap has solid metal coin charms on it, it is unapologetically heavy. If you aren’t careful, it might actually give you a stiff neck.

And remember how I said I wanted to wear this during my table tennis matches? Well, I actually tried it.

The result? Every time I hit the ball, the heavy metal coins swung around and violently smacked me in the head! It was so distracting I couldn’t focus on the game at all. (lol)

I’ll still wear it for everyday use, but if you decide to upcycle a keychain into a hairpiece, I definitely recommend being mindful of the weight!
