The Ultimate Gratin Toast at Jiro Coffee! A Hidden Gem of Japanese Kissa Cafes

Today, I want to talk passionately about a menu item at Jiro Coffee that can only be described as the “God of the Carbohydrate World”: their legendary Gratin Toast.
While it might not have as many locations as massive chains like Komeda Coffee or Hoshino Coffee, and isn’t quite as universally famous as Ueshima Coffee Co., Jiro Coffee is a beloved “if you know, you know” hidden gem among Japanese cafe lovers.

Back when I first checked in 2017, they only had around 6 locations. I happened to find one just within driving distance from my house, and I’ve been a devoted monthly regular ever since!
Inside Jiro Coffee
The interior features a warm, wood-based, calming atmosphere similar to Komeda Coffee.
It’s cozy enough to relax completely, but strikes just the right balance—meaning if a kid started running around yelling, you’d probably give them a gentle tap on the head.

The seating layout is also wonderfully friendly for solo diners. Because my favorite spot is tucked away in a quiet corner, it’s surprisingly peaceful even during morning rush hours. Plus, they have a massive parking lot, making it super stress-free if you’re traveling by car.

Why the Coffee is Amazing (Especially in a Copper Mug!)
Of course, being a traditional Japanese retro-style coffeehouse (Kissaten), the coffee is an absolute must.
And thank goodness—their iced coffee is served in a genuine copper mug! As I’ve ranted about before when talking about Ueshima Coffee, “Iced coffee just tastes better in a copper mug.”

The cold metal hits your lips instantly. Somehow, it makes the coffee taste smoother and milder. Plus, the sound of ice cubes clinking against copper has a pitch that’s a whole tone higher than glass—it’s just delightful!
I love copper mugs so much that I’ve actually considered buying a set for home. But let’s be honest, coffee I brew myself isn’t good anyway, so I usually just end up burning my tongue drinking out of a paper cup.
Also, I have a weird soft spot for Wiener Coffee (coffee topped with whipped cream). I usually prefer it with a dash of cinnamon, but sometimes restaurants charge an extra 30 yen for it, so my cheapskate side kicks in and I skip the cinnamon. At Jiro Coffee, however, they don’t charge extra for toppings—they just let you choose between “Medium” or “Large” sizes, making it super easy to order.

Their whipped cream is wonderfully low in sweetness, and paired with the subtly sweet coffee, it’s an absolute masterpiece.
The God of Carbs: The “Gratin Toast”
Now, let’s talk about the main event: the Gratin Toast.
Even though I’m definitely not an athlete, I try to watch my carbs and oils because I occasionally force myself to workout, go for runs, or play table tennis. But the moment I eat Jiro Coffee’s Gratin Toast, I forget all of my dietary rules because it is that good.
Just look at this.。

Isn’t the visual impact just insane? If teenagers use the word “insane” (yabai), this is straight-up middle-aged-lady “insane”!
And this isn’t just a sad slice of bread with a tiny sprinkle of melted cheese on top.
Inside, it’s packed tightly, oozing with rich white sauce, yet the bread underneath stays wonderfully crispy. The white sauce has a gentle sweetness with a hint of shrimp aroma, balanced by a perfect touch of saltiness. Topped with melted, gooey cheese, it is truly the God of Carbohydrates.

Even if you think, “There’s no way I can finish half a loaf of bread,” trust me—you will devour the whole thing in minutes.
My Secret Weapon: Tabasco!

It’s already a phenomenal gratin, but since the rich, comforting white sauce flavor continues all the way through, adding a dash of spicy Tabasco sauce gives it a surprising punch that makes you want to shout, “Seconds, please!”
If you’re one of those dainty sweet-tooths who says, “Oh, I could never finish this alone,” you can always share it with a friend! At 780 yen, splitting it between two people is a fantastic deal.
Me? Nobody in my household has heard the phrase “I’m too full to finish” in years.
Jiro Coffee’s Morning Service is Also a Steal
Aside from the Gratin Toast, Jiro Coffee offers a great morning breakfast service. You can get a morning toast plate with coffee for around 600 yen.
And their Hawaiian Pancakes are practically divine, too. I once ordered their seasonal pancake lunch special inspired by those heavenly flavors.

It was sweet, savory, and incredibly filling. On top of that, their minestrone soup was so delicious it left me speechless. It’s a seasonal item so I’m not sure if it’s currently available, but you can never go wrong with their pancakes, so it’s definitely worth visiting just for dessert. (You can even add extra pancakes for 150 yen each!)

Summary: You Can’t Go Wrong Here!
No matter what you order, Jiro Coffee never disappoints. I really hope they continue to open more locations in the future!
