All-You-Can-Eat Tororo in Asakusa! Lunch Buffet Guide at Asakusa Mugitoro

    Asakusa Mugitoro Buffet

Imagine enjoying endless bowls of silky, flavorful Tororo (grated Japanese yam) over fluffy barley rice in the heart of Tokyo…

Sounds like a dream, right? Well, that dream is a reality in Asakusa, Tokyo!

While traditional restaurants in historic Asakusa can sometimes feel a bit intimidating for first-timers, this famous spot offers a casual, budget-friendly lunch buffet. Here is my complete guide to the legendary all-you-can-eat Mugitoro lunch!

    TOC

    What is “Mugitoro”?

Before we dive in, what exactly is Mugitoro (麦とろ)? It’s a classic Japanese comfort dish consisting of Mugi-gohan (steamed rice mixed with barley) topped with Tororo (grated Japanese mountain yam seasoned with dashi broth). It has a unique, silky, pouring texture and is packed with health benefits!

Location & How to Get There

Today’s destination is Asakusa Mugitoro Main Building (浅草むぎとろ 本店).

    Access:

    • Tokyo Metro Ginza Line (Asakusa Station): 3-minute walk from Exit 4.
    • Toei Asakusa Line (Asakusa Station): 1-minute walk from Exit A3.

⚠️ Important Note: There is another building nearby called Asakusa Mugitoro Annex (別館). Make sure you head to the Main Building (本店) because the Annex does NOT offer the lunch buffet!

When I arrived, the line in front of the shop was already stretching down the street! The all-you-can-eat buffet is a super popular lunch-only deal served between 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM.

If you want to avoid waiting 30+ minutes, try arriving right around 10:30 AM before the doors open at 11:00 AM!

Unique Rule: Pay First Upon Entry!

Once your name is called and you step inside, you’ll encounter a quirky tradition: a payment pot right near the entrance!

Staff will ask you to drop your entry fee (around 1,500 yen for the buffet) directly into a decorative ceramic jar before taking your seat. It’s an unusual pre-payment system that often leaves overseas tourists delightfully surprised!

(Note: Prices and buffet systems may vary slightly over time, so please check the official site before visiting.)

Seating Note: During busy hours, table-sharing (sitting across from other guests) can be common, giving it a lively, traditional dining vibe!

Inside the Buffet Zone: Unlimited Tororo & Side Dishes!

Once you drop off your bags at your table, head straight to the self-service buffet counter!

    The line-up includes:

    • Steamed Barley Rice (Mugi-gohan)
    • Seasoned Grated Yam (Tororo)
    • Miso Soup
    • Traditional Japanese Side Dishes (Osozai)
    • Hot Green Tea

Unlike western hotel buffets with dozens of heavy entrees, this buffet focuses on elegant, healthy Japanese home cooking. You’ll find wholesome dishes like Chikuzenni (simmered chicken and root vegetables) and fluffy Japanese rolled omelet (Tamagoyaki).

Taste Test: How Does It Taste?

You scoop your desired amount of barley rice into a bowl, ladle a generous pouring of fluffy tororo on top, and slurp away!

The savory dashi broth infused in the yam glides down so smoothly. Paired with the chewy texture of the barley rice and the gentle, comforting side dishes, it is unbelievably delicious and light on the stomach.

It’s so refreshing that locals joke “Mugitoro isn’t food, it’s a drink!” because of how effortlessly you can devour bowl after bowl. You could easily eat three full bowls without feeling weighed down!

While the restaurant transforms into an upscale traditional Kaiseki (multi-course) restaurant in the evening, this daytime buffet is hands-down one of the best budget gourmet experiences in Tokyo.
